For the pitcher it shows you your weaknesses and strengths. It tells you what pitches are working on what batters and what pitches are not working on what batters. It also tells you how many pitches you are throwing per inning which is valuable information for your Coach. Your Coach should know your limit and be prepared to rescue you if you are getting close to your redline.<span id="more-1912"></span></p>
<p>I would recommend that whomever is doing the chart, should also bring a radar gun if you have one. They should also record your velocity on every pitch as well. This is  a good indication of when a pitcher is getting tired. This is because you will notice a significant drop in velocity at this point. It is also important to see the difference in velocity between your fastball and off speed pitches. If the difference is very small then this is a good indication of how well the pitcher will perform on that day. A small difference in pitch velocity will make it easier for hitters to adjust to your pitches.</p>
<p>It is very common in college and pro ball for the team to chart statistics, but in high school and under, you do not see this a lot. If you are a pitcher and having a hard time finding someone to chart your pitches then I would recommend that you first ask your friends and family who like to go to your games or find one of the team moms who always goes to the game and then ask her. You will be glad you did!</p>

The problem is this goes against the science of velocity.</p>
<p>Pitching velocity is the product of momentum and torque. You can read countless articles on this site about <a href="http://topvelocity.net/what-is-momentum-pitching/">Momentum</a> and <a href="http://topvelocity.net/tim-lincecum-teaches-top-velocity/">Torque</a>. Pulling the ball down during release prevents early internal rotation which is a key component to velocity as stated in the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) case study called <a href="http://topvelocity.net/comparison-of-high-velocity-and-low-velocity-pitch-deliveries/">Comparison of High Velocity and Low Velocity Pitch Deliveries</a>.<span id="more-1770"></span></p>
<p>Dr. Andrews case study states:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8230;.the maximum shoulder horizontal adduction occurred later and <strong>maximum shoulder internal rotation occurred earlier at greater ball velocities</strong>.</p></blockquote>
<p>Notice that Tim Lincecum, who&#8217;s fastball averages in the high nineties, proves this component in the case study true in his picture above. He is releasing the ball above his shoulder and head. He couldn&#8217;t release the ball any earlier than in his picture. There is no pull down phase in this high velocity delivery.  Early internal rotation occurred  because he has met ever component of greater ball velocity described in the ASMI case study. He has &#8220;less lead knee flexion velocity after front foot contact&#8221; which we find just before this image, &#8220;greater lead knee extension velocity at the time of ball release,&#8221; &#8220;Maximum shoulder external rotation&#8221; which also occurred before this picture and finally &#8220;forward trunk tilt at ball release.&#8221; Tim Lincecum is the epitome of this ASMI case study, especially early internal rotation.</p>
<p><a href="http://topvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/bad-example1.gif" rel="shadowbox[post-1770];player=img;"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1783" style="float:left;margin:5px;" title="bad-example" src="http://topvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/bad-example1-264x300.gif" alt="bad-example" width="242" height="275" /></a>To give an example of a pitcher who is fighting against his potential velocity by pulling the ball down to release would be this picture here. This happens because of a flaw in timing. When the front foot lands and momentum is slowing down then the arm must take over. The pitcher must pull the ball down to create more external rotation that was lost when his momentum slowed down. Momentum must accelerate all the way to ball release to support top velocity. Just like a plane taking off, momentum must not stop or velocity will suffer. In the case of pitching the arm suffers as well because this adds more wear and tear on the arm. Notice that both of these pitchers are almost in the exact same position but the pitcher here is releasing the ball in front of his face and his elbow has not extended. This tells me that his momentum has stopped and his arm is doing the majority of the work. This also means he created poor hip to shoulder <a href="http://topvelocity.net/tim-lincecum-teaches-top-velocity/">separation</a> at front foot strike which caused his arm to throw the ball too early in the delivery. The most important perspective of the ASMI <a href="../comparison-of-high-velocity-and-low-velocity-pitch-deliveries/">Comparison of High Velocity and Low Velocity Pitch Deliveries</a> is the timing of each component. If any of the four velocity components stated in the case study initiate too early then the proceeding component will not reach its maximum potential.</p>
<p>When you find yourself losing momentum and pulling the ball down to release you will notice that your ball pulls down as well as it reaches the plate but when you get early internal rotation you will notice that your ball jumps out of your hand and looks like it is rising as it reaches the plate. This is an increase in velocity. To prevent launching the ball high you must make sure you are achieving maximum forward trunk tilt at ball release.</p>
<p>When working to improve on these four components of velocity you must practice them in reverse not continuing until each component is mastered. This is the only way to develop top velocity and to break the conventional wisdom that says these mechanics can not be taught.</p>
<p>In conclusion, Alan Jaeger&#8217;s Long Toss program may sound good on video or his website but scientifically it fails. Next time you find yourself trying to pull the ball down at release to create velocity check your momentum because your velocity is slowing down.<br />

<p>Dr. James Andrews at ASMI put together a study of low velocity pitchers to high velocity pitchers to determine the difference in pitching mechanics. It was a good feeling after reading this study because the same information coming from Dr. Andrews is the same information Top Velocity has been preaching for years. It proves why I overcame a rotator cuff tear and was able to reach 94 mph on my fastball post surgery.<span id="more-1620"></span></p>
<p>What these high velocity pitchers where doing different was transferring more momentum to the ball faster and more efficiently than the low velocity pitchers. There was four significant differences and these differences did not start until front foot strike. This means it doesn&#8217;t matter how you build momentum but you must build as much momentum as you can, then when your front foot lands your front leg must stabilize and continue to extend back into the hips before ball release. This front knee extension mainly occurred with the high velocity group of pitchers. The next major component of high velocity came with maximum external rotation of the arm when the trunk was tilted all the way over the front foot due to the excessive amounts of momentum generated into front foot strike. The study states that the reason for this maximum external rotation is because</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Greater shoulder external rotation causes a stretch of the internal rotators allowing energy to be stored in these muscles, and creating greater internal rotation during the arm acceleration phase.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>This leads into the next and most important component of the study. This component is by far a major component of not only velocity but arm health and pitch location. The study finishes with describing the importance of early elbow extension and internal rotation once the arm begins its launch to the target. I can&#8217;t stress the importance of this component enough. I have to admit that Top Velocity has not focused enough on this component and doesn&#8217;t have it in the Ace Pitcher Handbook. This will be added soon!</p>
<p>Early elbow extension and internal rotation is even more important when throwing a football. This is because to throw a good spiral you must have early elbow extension and early internal rotation to spiral the ball to your target. I recommend using a football in your warm ups to help improve on this component. The key to getting early elbow extension and internal rotation is keeping the arm relaxed the entire pitching delivery. The main focus of the arm is to be in position to receive the transfer of momentum and to transfer that momentum quickly and almost effortlessly. The only part of the arm doing work is the forearm. It is holding onto the ball with the finger tips. This is what controls pitch movement and location.</p>

<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1454" style="float:right;margin:5px;" title="tim" src="http://topvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tim.jpg" alt="tim" width="239" height="178" />This question can stir up a big argument but there is only one answer. The arm does not generate the velocity. It only guides the pitch. Therefore the arm must follow the body and does not come into play until the body has done its job. <span id="more-1453"></span></p>
<p>I have been in many arguments about this issue. I have listened to coaches tell their pitchers that if they want to throw harder they need to speed up their arms. My question is how will speeding up your arm increase your velocity? This doesn&#8217;t make much sense because if you arm leads your body, it must leave the body behind. If you leave the body behind then it is up to the small muscles of the arm to take the entire workload of generating 90+ mph.</p>
<p>I think to prove my answer to the question above we must once again look at the little pitchers in the game. This is because these guys must work a lot harder to generate 90+ mph. I go once again to my favorite little man Tim Lincecum; 5&#8217;7 165 lbs. Notice the picture here of him at front foot strike. Now, where is his arm? It is hiding behind his body. YES, all you coaches out there who are coaching your pitchers to speed up there arms, it is behind his body. This means his body is driving the pitch. This means his body is generating the velocity. This means the arm is along for the ride.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1455" style="float:left;margin:5px;" title="vambh" src="http://topvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/vambh.jpg" alt="vambh" width="144" height="164" />The coaches who will argue my point here are the coaches who use giant pitchers like Randy Johnson as their example of pitchers who have a lot of arm action. This is true but these pitchers have more leverage on the ball than the average man. If you are 6&#8217;8 like Randy Johnson then congratulations you are in a small percentage of baseball players but if you are 6&#8217;2 and under take it easy on your arm and learn to work your body as a single unit in your delivery. When you work on generating velocity, work on pulling it from your legs and core and not your arm.</p>
<p>I recommend using medicine balls as often as you can. I have many throwing drills with these balls that force the pitcher to use every muscle they have to make the throw. This is how we must pitch if we want to throw and withstand 90+ mph.</p>

<p>Most of the articles on this site pertain to pure velocity but what is the value of Top Velocity when the pitcher can not locate his pitch? Zero is the answer. There is no value in Velocity that doesn&#8217;t end in a strike. I have witnessed many hard throwing pitchers or should I say throwers in my career who could not hit &#8220;the broad side of a barn.&#8221; These guys never made it anywhere because of this major problem of poor accuracy. The problem with coaching accuracy is that most pitching coaches over do it. They create pitchers who look like they should be throwing darts instead of fastballs. This is why I focus on velocity first and then I teach my pitchers how to control it.<span id="more-1421"></span></p>

<p>Pitch location is as important as velocity. For a pitcher to be successful on the mound he must disrupt the batters timing. There are many ways a pitcher can do this. Pitch speed, pitch movement and pitch location. I believe the two most effective is pitch speed and pitch location. If you can reach your top velocity and locate your pitches then you can make it into minor league ball with just a fastball and change up. I would recommend you use this stratgey in your own career because if you start throwing breaking balls and you have poor mechanics, it can be devastating to your arm. So why take the risk when you can be just as effective or even more effective with top velocity and good pitch location?</p>
<p>Before you can start hitting your spots with pin point accuracy you must understand how to control your pitches. Conventional wisdom would talk about the balance point and go on about it for hours. I will show you a different perspective.</p>
<p>Accuracy is controlling your momentum. To control your momentum you must be balanced but that should be second nature. The goal is to control your momentum without effecting it. This is where most pitchers fail. They try to control their momentum to a point that it slows it down. This is no good. This is why I teach top velocity until it becomes second nature and then I teach how to control that velocity.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-1422" style="float:left;margin:5px;" title="p_791602" src="http://topvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/p_791602-300x225.jpg" alt="p_791602" width="300" height="225" />The control comes from the front side. You must take aim with your front side as you begin to start your momentum to the target. This is important because once your hips start building momentum towards the target, you must do everything in your power to release every ounce of explosive energy from your body, while using that energy to fire certain muscle groups at specific times in your delivery. So once you lift your leg and kick that butt out to start your load to building momentum you must setup your front side for pitch location. To do this you must separate your hands and relax your throwing arm while closing off your glove hand. You must also slightly turn your lift leg foot inward to close off your hips. Notice the picture above of Jon Lester performing this setup. This is a similar moment in the delivery as a sprinter would perform just before taking off. The sprinter would setup his body for take off to control his launch and gives his body the best opportunity to reach his top velocity as quick as possible, which is the same thing we are trying to do as pitchers.</p>

</script></span>The reason for closing off the front side is because it makes it easier for our momentum to travel straight to the target. If the glove arm was to open early or the lift leg, then this would throw our weight off to the side and more than likely the pitch would follow. So staying closed is important because it keeps our momentum going straight to the target. Just like a sprinter wouldn&#8217;t want to start leaning to his left before he fired out of his stance.</p>
<p>Another important tip is to stay closed as long as possible because of the same reasons and also because it will help you build more torque in &#8220;Separation.&#8221; &#8220;Separation&#8221; is when your hips have opened to the target and your shoulders are still closed like the picture below. Building more torque means more velocity.</p>

To prevent this you must close your shoulders and hips off first and then the rest of the delivery you must keep them closed while hitting all the key components of velocity that I have described in detail on this site. This is a lot of coordination but remember not everyone has the ability to pitch in the top levels on the game.<br />

The key is to keep the Coach happy, while you find the best support you can, to help influence your career.</p>
<h2>What makes a BAD pitching Coach?</h2>
<p>Someone who has no experience in playing the position at the top levels of the game, or someone who has no certified education of how to coach the position.<span id="more-1164"></span></p>
<h2>How can a BAD pitching Coach effect a pitcher?</h2>
<p>Pitching takes a tremendous amount of muscle coordination. The body must naturally understand how to build maximum momentum and torque, to deliver an above average fastball to a specific location. It is a pitching Coaches job to guide the pitcher to reaching his athletic potential. This takes an expert understanding of the position and the athlete. If the pitching Coach is far from an expert then the chances of him being a guide to the pitchers athletic potential, is very poor. This could be detrimental to a young pitchers career because promoting bad mechanics, due to the lack of experience or education, will decrease velocity and cause injury. <h2>What are the signs of a BAD pitching Coach?</h2>
<blockquote><p><strong>1)</strong> No experience in the top levels of the game.</p>
<p><strong>2)</strong> No certified education in the world of pitching and athletic training.</p>
<p><strong>3) </strong>A poor understanding of Physics Driven Pitching Mechanics.</p>
<p><strong>4) </strong>A poor understanding of the physiology and psychology of his pitchers.</p>
<p><strong>5)</strong> Over throwing his staff of pitchers.</p>
<p><strong>6)</strong> Discouraging his pitchers from using a strength and conditioning program.</p>
<p><strong>7) </strong>Forcing his pitchers to throw more breaking balls than fastballs.</p>
<p><strong>8 )</strong> Using Long Distance running to build endurance in his pitchers.</p>
<p><strong>9)</strong> Excessive amounts of long toss.</p>
<p><strong>10)</strong> A poor warm-up and dynamic stretching routine.</p>
<p><strong>11)</strong> Not educating his pitchers on proper athletic nutrition and rehabilitation.</p>
<p><strong>12)</strong> Not educating his pitchers on the mental game.</p>
<p><strong>13)</strong> Uses a lot of poor conventional wisdom to coach his pitchers.</p></blockquote>
<h2>What are the signs of POOR conventional wisdom of pitching mechanics?</h2>
<p>These are old techniques of pitching, that have been proven throw science, to decrease velocity or cause injury.</p>
<blockquote><p>This would be Coaching the pitcher to:</p>
<p><strong>1)</strong> Take the ball out of the glove and reach it to the sky.</p>
<p><strong>2)</strong> Get into the T position. Glove hand to target and ball to center field.</p>
<p><strong>3)</strong> Pull the glove hand in hard to your body, while pulling the throwing arm down to throw.</p>
<p><strong>4) </strong>Kick the back leg up high after release. He may even use a chair for the pitcher to kick his leg over, after release, to force this bad pitching mechanic.</p>
<p><strong>5)</strong> Keep your landing leg bent at release. Do not let it straighten!</p>
<p><strong>6) </strong>Pull your head down hard during pitch.</p>
<p><strong>7)</strong> Wipe your arm.</p>
<p><strong>8 ) </strong>Slam your chest into your landing leg.</p>
<p><strong>9) </strong>Move your arm faster.</p>
<p><strong>10)</strong> Drive your glove hand to the target.</p></blockquote>
<h2>How to PLEASE a BAD Pitching Coach?</h2>
<p>I will be the first to tell you that this isn&#8217;t easy. Due to the high percentage of BAD pitching Coaches in all levels of the game, ever pitcher will deal with a BAD pitching Coach a few times to many in their career. The best way to deal with a BAD pitching Coach, without him having an effect on your career, is not to avoid him but to please him. Here is some TIPS that will help.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>1) </strong>Do whatever he says when he is looking and then do what you think is best when he isn&#8217;t looking.</p>
<p><strong>2)</strong> Study the game, the position, physics driven mechanics and strength and conditioning. Become your Coach.</p>
<p><strong>3) </strong>Do not let him catch you educating the other pitchers. Especially if he is a HOT HEAD.</p>
<p><strong>4)</strong> Do not screw around when he is around you.</p>
<p><strong>5)</strong> Do not talk bad about him to other players.</p>
<p>This is the MOST IMPORTANT TIP:</p>
<p><strong>6)</strong> You must IMPROVE.</p></blockquote>
<p>The hardest thing that any pitcher or athlete must learn, is that it is a rare case for you to find a Coach that will propel your career to the top levels of the game. This is because, they are just as concerned about their job, as you are about your job. So if you want to make it as a professional one day, you are going to have to knock down a lot of doors. You will always find support but the only person that is going to help you get their is yourself. I will leave you with this quote from Nolan Ryan.</p>

His body&#8217;s production of testosterone is failing. He will be forced to fight severe depression for the rest of his life.</p>
<h2>The question is how do we develop velocity legitmately?</h2>
<p>There are hundreds of articles on the web titled something similar to this article, but most of them are worthless, because they focus mainly on upper body mechanics as the only means to developing velocity. Any hard thrower will tell you, there is a lot more to velocity than just your arm. If you want to see significant gains in velocity read this entire article and the articles linked to it. The only way you are going to see improvements, is if you develop a good understanding of how velocity is generated.</p>
<p>Remember you are bound by nothing. You have the ability to throw 90+ mph. Doctors told me I would not be able to and I proved them wrong. These tips will help you do the same.<span id="more-644"></span></p>
<blockquote>
<h2>1. Change speeds.</h2>
</blockquote>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-657" style="float:right;margin:5px;" title="Padres Mariners Baseball" src="http://topvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/hoffman-265x300.jpg" alt="" width="89" height="100" />This should always be your first step in developing velocity because it has no risk involved. This creates an illusion of velocity. By changing the speed of your pitches, this will throw the hitter&#8217;s timing off and can make a 70 mph fastball look like a 90 mph fastball. Pitchers like Trevor Hoffman have made long major league careers off of this one tip. He is a master of the fastball, change up combination. Use this tip for immediate effect while you work on the other velocity tips.</p>

<h2>2. Pitch from the ground up.</h2>
</blockquote>
<p>We all make the mistake at a very young age, that to throw a baseball only takes the arm to perform the task. Then as we grow bigger and move up levels in the game, we find ourselves continuing to only use our shoulders and arms to throw the ball. This is a major problem. This is why we still have an incredible amount of shoulder injuries in the game. You must change your perspective. You must teach your body to recruit bigger muscle groups when you demand more velocity from your delivery. This begins in learning to pitch from the ground up. Velocity comes from forces added to the ball. These forces come from momentum in your lift leg and your push off the ground. You then must learn to transfer these forces into the ball. This is where velocity lives. Most young pitchers do not load at all. Once they lift their leg they fall towards the target. This causes poor velocity and arm injury. <h2>4. Building Core Torque.</h2>
</blockquote>

The core is the area from just above the knees to just below the chest. This area contains the strongest muscles in your body. So it makes sense that you should use this part of the body to generate velocity. If the core is not mainly used to build torque, then the shoulder and elbow will be forced to hold the torque needed to generate velocity. <h2>5. Create more Elastic Energy.</h2>
</blockquote>

This stretching of the stomach and shoulder is creating elastic energy in your body. The more relaxed you are, the more elastic energy can be created. <h2>6. Momentum transfer.</h2>

The problem with coaching someone on how to generate more momentum when pitching is that they have no idea how to control it and they get worse before they get better. This is why proper momentum transfer is essential for good velocity. If you leave any momentum in your body, then you have left some velocity behind. The Ace Pitcher component of &#8220;<a href="http://baseballvideostore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=1&amp;products_id=1&amp;zenid=50a909e354f9f984adcb439c7af60c3c">Stabilization</a>&#8221; describes how this momentum transfer must occur.</p>

<h2>7. Early elbow extension and Internal Rotation.</h2>
</blockquote>
<p>Most throwers believe that if they pull their arms down at release then this will generate more velocity. The opposite is true. High velocity pitchers release the ball earlier than low velocity pitchers. This happens after momentum transfer when their chest is out over their toes. This means after your body has done its job you must release the ball as quickly as possible by allowing your elbow to extend up and away from your head. You must also begin internally rotating your arm as soon as your elbow extends so you can release the pitch with your fingers on top of the ball. <h2>8. Refuel your ATP.</h2>

</script></span>ATP is the main source of energy for all muscle contraction. There are several chemical reactions that take place to produce ATP. When a muscle is used, a chemical reaction breaks down ATP to produce energy. There is only enough ATP stored in the muscle cell for two or three slow twitch contractions, or one burst of power from a fast twitch contraction. More ATP must be created.</p>
<p>To understand rest between throwing a pitch, first you must understand what happens during the delivery of the pitch. Initially your muscles use ATP to power the contractions but the levels of ATP available are limited. The cells have a very limited ability to replenish ATP during the activity before having to switch to other methods to fuel the activity.</p>
<p>Fortunately, your body can replenish ATP when you are resting. About 50% or half of the depleted ATP is replaced after one minute of total rest. Almost all of the ATP that the body can replenish (just over 95%) is restored after about three minutes of rest. I know pitchers can not wait that long between pitches, but the longer you can wait, the better opportunity to develope more velocity.</p>

<h2>9. Fast Twitch Muscle Fiber.</h2>
</blockquote>
<p><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-669" style="float:right;margin:5px;" title="muscle_chart" src="http://topvelocity.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/muscle_chart-300x136.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="136" />A proper strength and conditioning regime like the <a href="http://topvelocity.net/ace-pitcher-handbook/">Ace Pitcher Handbook</a>, is based around developing fast twitch muscle fiber. This is important for velocity, because when adding a little more velocity to a pitch, you must recruit more muscle fiber within your muscular system to make this happen. We have already talked about where that muscle fiber should come from, now you need to learn how to develop more muscle fiber in the correct places of your system. Spending most of your time in the weight room sitting on cushioned machines, isn&#8217;t the answer. Start with the &#8220;<a href="http://topvelocity.net/baseball-pitching-workout-beginner/">Beginner Pitching Workout</a>&#8221; and then you can move to the &#8220;Fusion System&#8221; in the Ace Pitcher Handbook at the bottom.</p>

<h2>10. Speed your recovery.</h2>

If your system is completely rebuilt and replenished, this is a better chance you will have the ability to generate top velocity. This is why it is important to keep a strict routine of a good strength training and conditioning program, along with a balanced alkaline based diet. You need to learn about alkaline based foods. These are green vegetables and more, which help restore the PH levels in your system. When your system becomes very acidic, you do not recovery as quickly. Diet is extremely important to recovery. <h2>Bonus tip: Lay off your arm.</h2>

It takes enough abuse on the mound. You need to make sure your strength training program isolates the core and legs more than the shoulders and arms. If your arm is constantly sore and tired, it is because you use it to much. Try changing habits, like brushing your teeth with your non-pitching arm and do not arm wrestle your roommates with your pitching arm. Take care of yourself and it will take care of you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I think of the Latin culture, I think of their food and their life style. When I say &#8220;Salsa,&#8221; I am not talking about food, I am talking about dance. I have had maybe two &#8220;Salsa&#8221; lessons in my life and it was my wife&#8217;s idea. When I think about it, I am so glad I had the experience because it has helped me as a pitcher.</p>

<p><span>A mixture of up tempo Latin styles of music. The salsa is not an actual style of Latin music; it is a style of dance. One that has become increasingly popular over time. Up beat Latin patterns and beats played together create a salsa style groove.</span></p></blockquote>
<p>When you take a lesson or watch it on the hit show &#8220;Dancing with the Stars,&#8221; you will see that &#8220;Salsa&#8221; is all about the hips moving the body. Observe the video.<span id="more-242"></span></p>

<p>So how can this help you as a pitcher? Well, pitching velocity we know comes from momentum and the proper use of the hips. Up to this point in my articles, I have not talked much about the hips, except for the purpose of &#8220;Separation.&#8221; Which is the most important component. This is separation in the back hip and the back shoulder. The reason for this is to develop majority torque in the core. Read my article on &#8220;<a href="http://topvelocity.net/how-to-develop-top-velocity/">How to Develop Top Velcotiy?</a>&#8221; to learn more about &#8220;Separation.&#8221;</p>
<p>The other purpose of the hips is what Tim Lincecum&#8217;s father calls, &#8220;Tightening the rubber band.&#8221; This means to build maximum torque in the hips, we must tighten them up just before the shoulders fire. This is where &#8220;Salsa&#8221; comes in. In &#8220;Salsa&#8221; the dancer kicks his feet with a kind of scissor step. It is like a gymnast on a balance beam. The feet are extended out, but if they were together, the feet would be touching each other. This makes it easier for the dancers body to swivel the hips back and forth; giving the dancer that groovy style of &#8220;Salsa.&#8221; So apply this to pitching. When your front foot lands make sure it is landing on the balance beam or a little across the body. This way it will allow the hips to close completely and tighten. If the leg lands open and off the balance beam, then it will be harder for the hips to close and it will decrease the hips range of motion.</p>
<p><span style="float:left;margin:5px;"><!--adsense--></span>I recommend that you stand up from the computer now, try out what I am telling you and see for yourself. When your landing foot is NOT landing on the balance beam and it is in an open stance, your hips do not have a lot of freedom or range of motion. Get in this position and try to swivel your hips. Now, if the front leg lands closed perfectly on the balance beam, then this will give your hips all of their potential range of motion and the ability to completely close off. Try this as well and feel how your hips have more range of motion to swivel and it is easier to close them off. In return, this is increasing our velocity because we are building more torque in the core when we can completely tighten our hips closed, after &#8220;Separation.&#8221;</p>
<p>So this is my theory. Maybe these Latin Pitchers have better hip action because of their Latin culture. Look at these hard throwing Latin Pitcher&#8217;s hips and you will see that they have a lot of &#8220;Salsa&#8221; in their delivery.</p>
<p>This is a video of Felix Hernandez pitching. You will see in his first pitch how closed his landing leg lands and how tight his hips get. Could this be his secret to his 100 MPH fastball? I will leave that up to you to answer.</p>
